A collaborative approach to counseling. For real.

My Approach:

When you begin counseling with my practice, we will start with a conversation about what your goals are. For example: do you want to cut back or quit using drugs or alcohol? Do you want to change your eating habits? Do you want to quit gambling? Are you interested in quitting or using a harm-reduction approach? I will also want to know WHY you want to make this change and what drives you- after all, you are the expert on you. Throughout your counseling, you will be in the driver’s seat. I will be here alongside you with my expertise in behavior change to help guide your journey.

One thing I will not be doing is judging you- you are a human, and we are all unique. With the utmost empathy and compassion, I understand that there are reasons for where you are today, perhaps trauma or other difficult life circumstances. I will meet you wherever you are, and we will move forward together. You are not in this alone.

Therapeutic Techniques:

I use a variety of evidence-based counseling techniques, primarily Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). CBT involves identifying and replacing unhelpful thought patterns (also called cognitive distortions). By replacing cognitive distortions with more balanced, accurate thoughts, you will guide yourself toward your desired changes. CBT also involves practicing healthy coping skills. We will focus on the skills that come most naturally to you- in other words, we will play off your strengths to work toward your goals.

CBT, however, has its limitations and is not appropriate for everyone. We will frequently check in with each other and adjust the counseling approach as needed. I am trained on a variety of therapeutic techniques and will work with you until you are happy with your progress.
